Flash Memory

FLASH memory comes in many formats as listed below:

CompactFlash (CF).   The most popular; thicker than some of the other formats so it is more rugged; comes in the largest capacities (up to 4GB’s).

SECURE DIGITAL (SD).    For high read/write performance and high security.  This format is becoming increasingly popular with slots being standard equipment in many laptops and Tablet PC’s.

MEMORY STICK (MS).

Multimedia Cards (MMC).  Can also be used in SD slots.

SMART MEDIA (SM).

xD Picture Card.  XD FLASH  (XD).  Used for new Olympus and Fuji cameras.

Flash memory comes in various speeds, which is important for digital cameras.  It would be nice to standardize on a single flash memory standard in your office so that all digital cameras and all PDA’s and other devices used the same format of flash memory.

RECOMMENDATION.  Compact Flash … due to CF’s capacity and standardization and ruggedness.
