FIRST.  The vast majority of computer problems can be solved by restarting the computer.  Before calling for tech support, restart the computer.  In difficult situations you may have to power off ALL equipment including file servers, print servers, printers, web routers and LAN hubs.  Most equipment including computers, keep power on to the main circuit board even if the main switch is turned off … and some pieces of equipment lack on/off switches altogether … so in order to completely power down the equipment you must remove the power cord from the equipment.  After unplugging the equipment, wait a few minutes so that power is dissipated from all capacitors.  Power on the equipment in the following order:  LAN hubs, web routers, print servers, printers, servers, and then workstations.

SECOND.  Close your applications when you leave your desk.  As you’re working in different programs all of your work is retained in RAM (random access memory).  RAM is volatile.  If electricity is lost, or there is a power surge, then your work is LOST.  When you exit an application (or you use SAVE in the File menu) your work is saved to disk (a hard drive).  The disk is NOT volatile memory.  If you walk away from your desk with applications open you are just asking for your work to be lost.  Close your applications.

THIRD.  Backup and save your data.  Even if you close your applications, your disk may “crash” (break) and your work may not be recoverable … UNLESS you have backed up your data to a second and third disk.
